Southwest Miami-Dade school locked down after police investigation

A large police presence in the neighborhood near Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School led school staff to lock down students Thursday morning, district officials said.

The southwest Miami-Dade County school went into lockdown before 8 a.m., but it was lifted at 9:45 a.m., Miami-Dade County Public Schools spokesman Elmo Lugo said.

A neighbor told the Miami Herald that police are investigating a shooting. A reporter also saw a photograph of a man lying on the ground, bleeding, with officers treating him.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the incident that led to the investigation did not involve its deputies, although deputies were at what appeared to be a crime scene.

Law enforcement had several roads taped off, including Southwest 157th Avenue at 144th Street, and in the neighborhood at Southwest 157th Passage and 141st Street.

Russell Quinoa, a resident of the neighborhood, said that’s where the incident took place. He said he woke up to the sound of gunfire.

“All we heard was a big pop, and at that point, almost immediately, there was a rush of police that started coming into the neighborhood and flooded it,” Quinoa said.
