Travel alert: Amazon cargo plane moved and runway fully opens at Miami airport

Miami International Airport fully opened a runway Tuesday night as the wreckage of a crashed Amazon cargo plane was moved out of the way.

The runway, one of four at MIA, had been limited to eastbound departures in recent days. The airport’s fourth runway remains closed.

The charred Amazon plane, which crashed over Labor Day weekend after it overshot a runway and hit vehicles, killing five people, was moved to an open lot late Tuesday and restrictions on the third runway were lifted about 8 p.m., Miami-Dade Aviation Department Communications Director Greg Chin said.

The fourth runway should reopen soon, Chin said, but he didn’t give a timeline. He said the closed runway requires more inspection and repairs before it returns to service.

All flights were halted at Miami International Airport Sept. 6 after the Amazon cargo plane crashed after landing and caught fire. In addition to the five killed, several people were injured, including the two pilots.

The crash shut down all flights at the airport for hours before two for the four runways opened. But since then, several hundreds of flights have been delayed at MIA each day, even with the partial opening of the third runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board is at MIA investigating the crash of the Boeing 767-300, which was operated by 21 Air. A week after the crash, Amazon suspended ties with the company.

Even with the third runway’s full opening for Wednesday morning travel, passengers should check on flight status with their airlines.

MIA has several other ways to check flights, including a list of airlines, their door number, departure concourse, check-in counter location and baggage-claim area. The airport also has a mobile app.
