Weather alert: A brief break before strong storms return to South Florida

The storms are coming back.

Just when you thought the daily deluges were over in South Florida, forecasters are predicting the return of rain by mid-week.

Aside from stray showers, most of Tuesday teases with sunny skies and drier air. Storm chances are 30% to 40%, with highs around 90.

But come Wednesday, the region will hear that familiar rumble of thunder as a stormy stretch starts again. At least the Canes and Dolphins are playing on the road this week.

What’s changing in the South Florida forecast?

Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Miami predict the next bundle of wet days and evenings begin Wednesday morning during rush hour with a soggy stretch of 60% from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. And then, like a spoiled brat, we get a tantrum of more than 80% rain and thunderstorms from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“Everything gets a little heavier,” said meteorologist Dave Warren of CBS News Miami.

The wet, gray and crackling weather pattern holds with rain and storms running 60% to near 90% for most of Thursday from 8 a.m. through 7 p.m.

Friday carries an 80% chance of rain from morning to evening.

And the Saturday and Sunday brings more “unsettled weather,” Warren said, “with the weather service forecast calling for a stretch of 60% to 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms.

The heavy rain in the forecast could set off flood and lightning alerts in South Florida.
