1995 Dodge Viper RT/10 for Sale With 29,000 Miles

Nothing Like it in the ’90s

On paper, it sounded like a flight of fancy or a concept car. However, the Dodge Viper’s brief, shocking run made it into production, and it was a show of Chrysler Corporation’s virility in the ’90s. After all, it had just performed a miracle after it nearly went bankrupt, took a bailout, and managed to pay the loan ahead of schedule in the ’80s.

The Viper was, and still is, madness on wheels. In the beginning was a lightweight, V10-powered roadster that thought safety aids were overrated, and that the car’s safety feature was your ability behind the wheel and luck. It was, by all means, the Shelby Cobra reincarnated, and there will never be anything like it ever again, especially in today’s automotive climate.

The Backstory

For most folks, the image of an early Viper would be a red RT/10 (roadster). After all, the first model year of the sports car was offered in no other color, though later models had other options. Still, most went with red, so seeing a Viper RT/10 in another color is a genuine treat. The early models, known as the SR I and built from 1992 to 1995, were the purest, with the ’92 not even available with air conditioning. As such, Classic.com puts market values at around $49,300 for good examples, which is a little lower than the heavily updated SR II models.

We found an SR I Viper over at Bring a Trailer, and what makes this spot amusing is that it’s not red. Of the nearly 6,000 made, just 419 were painted in Emerald Green Pearl. Bright Yellow was even rarer, with fewer than 300 in that shade. The one for sale right now spent most of its life in California, and has wound up in Pennsylvania earlier this year. We’d love to hear more about its ownership history and service records. Note that this is more of a pre-loved (but well-cared-for) example than a restored one, so there are some imperfections here and there. Nonetheless, the rarity and novelty factor is there, and it’s worth a peek.

Why it’s Special

The SR I Viper is a very special car, indeed. It’s not exactly the car Chrysler needed, but it was an epic image booster. Its specs were insane at the time, and the lack of safety aids meant every trip was a wild ride. It was fast, loud, and built to deliver a whole lot of thrills per mile. It’s not something you can build these days, either, given the greater emphasis on electrification. The SR I Viper brings us back to a more carefree era that produced some of the greatest American cars ever made.
