Well, it took me 54 years to record this latest episode of the Greg Cote Show podcast.

It begins with me, alone on camera, speaking for seven or eight minutes — that’s a long time — about my past few days. On Thursday (which happened to be my birthday), I got a call from a McClatchy executive informing me I was being laid off from the Miami Herald.

I had a very, very long time to imagine how this might feel but had no idea …until it actually happened.

I will have a farewell column in the Herald later this month encompassing the full scope of my career. This podcast episode is not that. This is how it felt in the immediacy of it. The emotions I’ve experienced. My overriding feeling. A little bit of what’s next and more.

Not sure if you’ll see it or hear it, but I definitely had to pause and fight back tears on a few times during this.

One thing for sure moving forward is that I have not retired. The Herald may be retiring me, but I will continue to do my podcast independently, I’ll continue to be a regular on the Dan Le Batard Show, and I’ll continue to write — details on that soon.

For now, this is about the news I got Thursday, and how one comprehends the end after more than half a century.
