Jerry Jones, Cowboys Make Decision After Unfortunate Malik Davis News
Jerry Jones and Dak Prescott have their eyes firmly set on that elusive fifth Super Bowl ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The Dallas Cowboys ended the 2025 season on a disappointing note, finishing the campaign with a 7-9-1 record and missing the playoffs entirely for the second consecutive season. But, the Cowboys are infused with a fresh wave of enthusiasm following multiple changes during the offseason.

Prescott, along with George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb, were the key figures of the Cowboys’ offense. The trio was instrumental in the team averaging 27.7 points per game and scoring 471 points throughout the 2025 season, the seventh-highest total in the NFL. Prescott threw for 4,552 yards and 30 touchdowns, while Pickens and Lamb recorded 1,429 and 1,077 receiving yards, respectively.
The defense was the Achilles’ heel for Jones and the Cowboys. It allowed 511 points over the course of the season, the worst in the league. But, Jones has addressed this head-on by replacing Matt Eberflus with Christian Parker as the defensive coordinator and bringing in defensive reinforcements such as Caleb Downs, Rashan Gary and Von Miller, among others.
Jones pulled off a quiet but effective offseason by trying to find the right fits for the Cowboys rather than splashing cash. However, the Cowboys’ picture-perfect offseason has been marred by an unfortunate injury update.
Malik Davis, who suffered a hip injury during Friday’s practice, has been ruled out of the season after undergoing surgery. The Cowboys have placed him on season-ending injured reserve.

Jones and the Cowboys have wasted no time and decided to sign Israel Abanikanda to the active roster from the practice squad to replace Davis on the roster. The move ensures there is enough depth in the running back room after the unfortunate setback.
Prescott and the Cowboys will kickoff their 2026 NFL season against the New York Giants on Sunday, September 13, as they look to start on a winning note despite the injuries.
