College football fans were left scrambling for channels as the delayed matchup between No. 6 Oregon and Oklahoma State moved from ESPN to ESPN2 and then ESPNews during a dramatic Week 2 finish.

The chaos began with a 90-minute lightning delay at Boone Pickens Stadium. The game was scheduled to kick off at noon ET on ESPN, but severe thunderstorms and lightning within an eight-mile radius of the stadium pushed the start time back to approximately 1:30 p.m. ET.

That delay created a scheduling problem for ESPN later in the afternoon.

Why ESPN Moved the Oregon-Oklahoma State Game

By around 3:55 p.m. ET, the Oregon-Oklahoma State game was still being played when ESPN’s scheduled coverage window for the US Open women’s singles final arrived. With the tennis final taking priority, ESPN shifted the football broadcast to ESPN2.

The move frustrated viewers even more because Oklahoma State was threatening to complete a major upset over Oregon. The unranked Cowboys were leading the No. 6 Ducks 39-31, leaving fans desperate to follow the closing stages of the game.

The broadcast shuffle did not end on ESPN2. As the football game continued, ESPN2 had to make room for its next scheduled college football broadcast, featuring Pitt. ESPN then moved the Oregon-Oklahoma State game again, this time to ESPNews.

That left viewers following the matchup across three different channels: ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNews.

Fans React to the ESPN Broadcast Chaos

The repeated changes sparked widespread frustration on X, formerly known as Twitter. Many fans questioned ESPN’s decision to move away from a potential upset involving one of the country’s top-ranked teams.

“One of the national championship contenders in college football is in a potential upset and ESPN cuts to US Open tennis and dumps the Oregon game on ESPN News,” one viewer wrote.

Another fan was furious about the constant channel changes, posting: “ESPN keeps changing the channel that Oregon at Oklahoma state is on. The dumbest thing ever.”

Others blamed the weather delay and the US Open for making the game difficult to follow.

“ESPN has made it far too complicated to follow this Oregon-Oklahoma St game. Thanks to weather delay and us open it’s now on its 3rd channel,” a user wrote.

The disruption also caused problems for streaming viewers. One YouTube TV user complained that the platform made it difficult to locate ESPNews during the game, writing: “Also, ridiculous you can’t search a channel (ESPNEWS) on @YouTubeTV and get the damn channel – WHAT ARE WE DOING???”

Another fan pointed to the competing delays, asking: “ESPN are you really making me flip over again?!? First it’s for the US Open then for a game that’s in a weather delay?!?”

The channel changes were particularly unpopular because Oklahoma State was in the middle of a stunning upset attempt against Oregon. Fans who had started watching on ESPN suddenly had to find ESPN2, only to move again to ESPNews later in the afternoon.
