St. Thomas University president resigns amid investigation into policy violation

More than a month after an investigation into his conduct was launched, St. Thomas University President David Armstrong has resigned from his position.

Armstrong and the university jointly announced his resignation in a statement Tuesday. He was president of the private Catholic university in Miami Gardens for eight years.

“We accept PresidentArmstrong’s decision and thank him for the contributions he made to St. Thomas University. We wish him well in his future endeavors,” the university said in the statement.

In July, Armstrong was placed on leave as the university investigated claims he violated university policy. A spokesperson for the university did not immediately respond to questions on the results of the investigation into Armstrong’s conduct or the nature of the alleged violation.

According to Tuesday’s statement, the university’s board of trustees has appointed Father Rafael Capo, who was previously vice president for Mission and Ministry and dean of Theology as interim president while it conducts a national search for a new president.

Armstrong started his position with the university in 2018. Prior to his appointment, he was the longtime president Thomas More College in Kentucky. He replaced Monsignor Franklyn Casale, who retired after 24 years at the school.
