Milcent’s 3 TD passes lead Monarch to comeback win over Cardinal Gibbons

Monarch junior Jeremiah Milcent has had one of the hotter starts of any quarterback in South Florida.

It continued on Friday night and helped rally the Knights to a 20-13 comeback win over the host Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs at Gibbons’ home field in Fort Lauderdale.

Trailing 10-0 at halftime, Milcent threw three touchdown passes in the second half to help Monarch (2-1) score 20 unanswered points.

Milcent threw for 257 yards, which was actually a season-low, after throwing for 334 yards against Chaminade-Madonna in the Knights’ season opener and 415 yards against Miramar last week.

Milcent’s three touchdown passes brought his season total to 10, and he’s thrown only two interceptions.

Despite a slow start in the first half, during which he was sacked three times, Milcent completed 22 of 32 passes and threw one of those interceptions during the first half.

Gibbons (2-1) took an early 7-0 lead when Tyler Chance found Donte Findeson over the middle for a 40-yard touchdown with 7:49 left in the second quarter. Findeson finished with 70 yards rushing on 14 carries.

But Monarch’s defense limited Chance’s effectiveness in the second half. Chance threw for 253 yards, but was intercepted three times, including a game-clinching pick with five seconds left at midfield by Conroy Whyte II.

Anthony Williams and Jaden Diaz had the other two interceptions for the Knights.

Milcent got Monarch on the board with 7:37 left in the third quarter when he rolled around and found Darren Jeudy open for a 2-yard touchdown pass. Monarch failed the two-point try leaving the score at 10-6. Milcent’s go-ahead touchdown pass covered 28 yards with 11 seconds left in the third.

Gibbons narrowed the deficit to seven with 2:57 remaining in the game on a 31-yard field goal by Ryan Mackie. An onside kick attempt failed, but Gibbons regained possession after forcing Monarch to punt with 56 seconds left.

But Gibbons never crossed midfield as Chance was forced into the hurried throw that ended with Whyte’s interception.

Monarch heads into a bye week next week before hosting Sunrise Piper on Sept. 18. Gibbons will continue its challenging home slate to start the season next week when it hosts Coconut Creek on Thursday at 7.
