Are Publix and Costco open on Labor Day? Garbage picked up? See holiday changes

Labor Day is Monday. We shop. We picnic. We party. Some of us even labor.

If you’re spending the holiday outside, storms might send you indoors, maybe even to the mall. But is it open as usual?

What about the post office and courts? And can you get around as usual on trains and buses in South Florida on the holiday?

Here’s what’s open, closed or running on a different schedule in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area on Monday, Sept. 7:

Supermarkets and malls

While many of you may be off for this federal holiday, malls and grocery stores figure you want to shop. So with one exception, all the grocers — Publix, Winn-Dixie, Whole Foods Market, Sedano’s, Presidente, Milam’s, Fresco y Mas — are open regular hours. Note: Aldi plans to close at 6 p.m. on Labor Day.

Major malls including Aventura, Dadeland and Sawgrass Mills — also are open regular hours.

Big box stores

Much like supermarkets and malls, big box stores Walmart, Target and BJ’s Wholesale Club are open regular hours on Labor Day.

One exception: Costco is closed on the Monday holiday.

Pharmacy chains

CVS/Navarro: Regular store hours, but most pharmacies will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check your location.

Walgreens: Regular store hours, but most pharmacies will be closed except for 24 hour locations. Check with your store.

Mass transit

Miami-Dade: Metrobus, Metromover and Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Broward: Broward County Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Tri-Rail: Tri-Rail will run on its weekend/holiday schedule.

Brightline: Runs on its usual schedule.

Garbage

South Florida municipalities don’t alter garbage collection for Labor Day. That means Miami, Coral Gables, Aventura and other cities along with Miami-Dade County, Fort Lauderdale and Broward County operate on a normal schedule.

Post office and mail

The old saying, “Neither rain, snow nor sleet stops the mail” may apply, but not on federal holidays. Post office branches will be closed. And no mail delivery on Labor Day.

Courts/Schools/Libraries/Banks

You’re not going to court. Or school. Or the library or your bank. These places will be closed on Labor Day. But you can do online banking and online reading as the websites will be operational.
