Arrest made in 2024 argument turned murder outside Miami Gardens store

Detectives arrested a man Tuesday who’s accused of gunning down another man outside a Miami Gardens convenience store almost two years ago.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Nov. 21, 2024, in front of the Quick Stop at 3185 NW 207th Street, police said. When officers arrived, they found 43-year-old Serge Jean, Jr. lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics took him to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital. He died from his wounds there Dec. 10.

Detectives arrested 34-year-old Devon Kennedrick Clarke Tuesday on a second-degree murder charge and booked him into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He’s being held without bond, according to his arrest report.

According to his probable cause affidavit, Clarke was the passenger in a black Nissan Maxima that pulled up to the Quick Stop. Security camera footage shows Clarke and the driver get out of the car and walk into the store, exiting minutes later, Detective Kelly Gomez wrote in the report.

Jean was hanging outside the store with another man. The footage shows Jean, “without apparent provocation,” punch Clarke in the face, causing him to stumble backwards, the report states. Clarke responded by pulling out a .38-caliber revolver and shooting Jean, the footage shows, according to the report.

Jean turned around to run away, but Clarke shot him in the back, causing him to collapse, the affidavit states.

It’s not clear from the affidavit where Clarke went in the time between the shooting and his arrest, but both the driver who was with Clarke and Jean told detectives he was homeless.

Detectives interviewed Jean in the hospital before he died. He told them that Clarke, who he knew as “Von,” previously spoke about killing him. Jean told detectives he did not know why Clarke wanted to kill him. Jean also told detective that he remembered Clarke pulling out the gun, but he did not know what the argument was about.

The driver of the Nissan, whose name was redacted from the affidavit, went to the police station with his father the day after the shooting because he wanted to clear his name. He told police that he was in fear for his life because Clarke knew where he lived.

He said he knew Clarke for about a month, and Clarke asked him to drive him to the Quick Stop that day so he could sell two boxes of beer, the affidavit states. The man told detectives that Clarke tried to shake Jean’s hand as he walked into the store, but Jean refused the gesture, the report states.

Clarke sold a clerk the beer for $20 and he and the driver left the store. The man also told detectives that he knew Clarke carried a .38 revolver, the affidavit states.

Clarke is being represented by an attorney with the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office, which declined to comment when reached Wednesday.
