Is gas up or down in South Florida? Prices changing? Check your area

As we get back to work and school this week, South Florida drivers continue to see stable prices at the pump so far this week.

“Florida drivers didn’t see much movement at the pump …, even though the cost of oil and gasoline futures moved higher,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “If wholesale fuel costs remain elevated, drivers could begin seeing more upward pressure on pump prices in the coming days.”

The average price in Miami and Fort Lauderdale is 11 cents a gallon lower than a month ago but 96 cents higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy, a national fuel monitoring service that surveys nearly 1,700 stations in South Florida

North Florida is the cheapest to pump in Florida while the Keys and Palm Beach County are the most expensive areas to buy gas, according to AAA.

Gas prices in South Florida

Miami-Dade: The average price: $3.89 on Monday, Aug. 24, the same as a week ago, according to AAA.

Fort Lauderdale: $3.92, a 1-cent decrease from a week ago.

West Palm Beach/Boca Raton: $4.03, a 1-cent decrease from a week ago.

Monroe County: $4.10, a 1-cent decrease from a week ago.

Average: The average price for a gallon of gas in Florida on Monday, Aug. 24, is $3.84, the same as a week ago.

Daytona Beach: $3.87

U.S. price at the pump

Average: The average price for a gallon of gas across the country on Monday, Aug. 24, according to AAA, is $4.09, a 3-cent increase from a week ago.

What the experts are saying

▪ Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy:

“Average gasoline prices moved higher in the majority of states over the last week, with fewer than 10 states seeing declines, while diesel surged nearly 17 cents per gallon nationally, leaving it less than 25 cents away from an all-time record high. Gasoline, while not at all-time records, is at its highest level ever recorded this late in the calendar year, meaning Americans could for the first time ever see a national average price of gasoline above $4 per gallon on Labor Day — eclipsing the previous record of $3.83 per gallon set in 2012. While some oil shipments are apparently getting through the Strait of Hormuz, the dominant force propping up both gasoline and diesel prices is increasingly the growing loss of Russian refinery capacity, as continued Ukrainian attacks knock more facilities offline and constrain the global supply of refined fuels. Until that refining supply picture improves, both gasoline and diesel prices face continued upward pressure.”
