Mother, 2-year-old child killed by lightning strike in Margate, police say

A mother and her two-year-old daughter were struck and killed by lightning Sunday afternoon in Margate, police said.

Margate police and fire rescue responded around 2:30 p.m. to a report of two people who were struck by lightning and found lying on a sidewalk in the area of 7941 NW 1st St., police said. Authorities immediately began rendering aid, including CPR, when they arrived.

Kenya Glasgow, who authorities say appeared to be around 31, was taken to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach, the Margate Police Department said in a statement. The unnamed toddler was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, accompanied by a police escort.

The mother and toddler died shortly after arriving at the hospitals, police said.

Officials are investigating the incident. Margate police “extends its deepest condolences to the victims’ family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Update: The Miami Herald initially reported that Glasgow, 40, died along with her 2-year-old son based upon a police department press release. Margate police later update the information to say that “the child was a female and the mother appears to be approximately 31 years old.”
