Teen shot at guard then went ‘car hopping’ with accomplice: South Florida cops

Just a few hours before going on a crime spree that eventually ended with a police officer being headbutted in the chest, two young men tried to steal a security guard’s car Thursday, authorities say. One of the pair allegedly shot at him when they were caught in the act.

Daniel Dominguez, 18, is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, armed burglary, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, armed burglary of an unoccupied vehicle, resisting an officer with violence, battering an officer and death threat to an officer.

Lucas Gomez-Quintero, 19, is facing charges of armed burglary, two counts of accessory after the fact, loitering and burglary of an unoccupied structure. As of Friday, both men were still in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Around 1 a.m. Thursday, security guard Jamel Donat was riding in a golf cart doing his routine patrol at Atlantic Doral, an apartment complex, when he noticed Dominguez and Gomez-Quintero had broken into his car, their arrest reports read.

At first, they tried to convince him that it was their car as Dominguez sat in the driver’s seat. When Donat accused them of trying to steal his car, Dominguez got out and allegedly pointed a black handgun at him. Gomez-Quintero intervened and they both walked away from Donat, getting back into their own car.

Before leaving, Dominguez pulled up alongside Donat and allegedly shot at him four times. Donat dove behind his golf cart, one of the reports reads.

A forensic analysis found the golf cart and a nearby garage door had been hit by bullets.

Just four hours later, while Doral police officers were still investigating the shooting, Dominguez and Gomez-Quintero tried to break into cars outside Hialeah Gardens homes, police said.

Hialeah Gardens police officers raced to the burglary 911 calls and found the two men standing by a pickup truck in the area of 8800 Northwest 116th Terrace. One of the officers claimed Dominguez had a knife in his hand, pulled out his service weapon and demanded he put it down.

The pair were eventually arrested, with Dominguez struggling with officers as they tried to put handcuffs on him, police said. While in custody, Dominguez allegedly threatened that when he gets out of jail he will find and kill the officers, an arrest report reads.

When authorities tried to move him, Dominguez headbutted one of the officers in the chest, police said.

Both men were taken to be interrogated by Doral police for the earlier shooting. Dominguez didn’t say a word, but Gomez-Quintero told authorities everything, a report reads.

He confirmed the details of the Doral shooting and the Hialeah Gardens car burglaries. He told officers it was Dominguez who suggested “car hopping,” breaking into unlocked cars, and that he felt threatened by him so he followed along.

However, Gomez-Quintero told officers “Dominguez did not threaten him at any point.”
