New string of heat advisories began Monday in Miami. When will it end this time?

The heat is on again, South Florida.

After a one day drop in heat intensity — marginally, at that — Sunday ended a string of 12 consecutive days of heat advisories from the National Weather Service in Miami.

On Monday — perhaps fittingly, new week, new advisory — a new string can begin. The service issued an advisory early Monday morning for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties to run from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. The possible high “feels-like,” humidity-laden temperature could hit between 106 and 108, with regular air temp hovering around 90.

“Take extra precautions when outside,” the service’s briefing advised. Aside from hydrating with water, these include:

• Wearing lightweight and loose fitting clothing.
• Trying to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. It was around 80 at 9 a.m. in Kendall, for instance, and won’t dip below 90 until about 7 p.m. Monday night in the Miami area.
• Taking action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Signs can include hot, dry skin and sweating and confusion ahead of a possible heat stroke. Heavy sweating with cold, pale or clammy skin, along with variations in pulse rate and headache, nausea, vomiting or dizziness and fatigue can indicate heat exhaustion.

The new string of heat advisories could run through Sunday, according to the weather service. Meteorologists at the Miami office issue these advisories when the forecast feels-like temp is expected to be at 105 or higher for two hours or more. According to the alert, that number should be hit every day this week with the hottest index day landing on Saturday at 107 — and 105 and 106 every other day into Sunday.

The regular air temperature is forecast at 90 every day this week except for Saturday’s 92. The Florida Keys also will run a week of mostly dry 90s with a triple-digit heat index.

There are no heat advisories issued in the Keys as of Monday as the island chain has a higher index threshold to trigger an alert than Miami-Dade does. A feels-like temp of 108 has to be sustained for two hours for the Key West service to issue an advisory.

Rain relief? What? You think this is rainy season?

Don’t expect much, save a possible passing shower Monday stirred up by a depression, and possible Tropical Storm Bertha, that was near the Florida Panhandle Monday morning and expected to track west and not otherwise be a threat to South Florida.

Rain chances are 20% Monday, near nil Tuesday, about 10% Wednesday and Thursday, and inches up into the weekend. Forecasters eye a 30% chance Friday and Saturday and 40% Sunday.

“There will be little to no relief from the heat due to rain,” said CBS News Miami meteorologist Scott Withers in his Monday weather report.
