Deputies search for shooter after Hollywood man dies in a car crash

A 32-year-old driver was shot early Sunday before crashing his car in Pembroke Park, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Pembroke Park Police Department officers responded shortly before 1 a.m. to a crash near the 3900 block of West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, according to BSO.

A witness told officers that a victim, later identified as Daniel Mathis, of Hollywood, was involved in a verbal fight with an unknown man at an Orion gas station at 3990 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., BSO said.

“At some point, the altercation escalated, and Mathis was shot,” BSO said in a statement.

Mathis tried to flee in a Dodge Challenger but drove over a center media, causing a Volkswagen SUV that was traveling the opposite direction to T-bone crash with the Challenger, BSO said.

He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood where he died around 1:36 a.m.
