One of the abductors was wounded in a shootout inside an apartment and later arrested, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office
The sheriff’s office report did not indicate a motive for the kidnapping and killing.
On the night of Oct. 3, Devorise Carl Johnson, 21, and four other men arrived at the Aliro Apartment Complex, 14040 Biscayne Blvd., and waited for Eddrick Bethune,22, to leave the building.
Around midnight, Bethune walked into the parking lot, where the men approached him in a gray 2026 Toyota Camry equipped with flashing blue and red lights, according to Johnson’s arrest affidavit.
The driver and front passenger got out of the vehicle wearing baseball caps, long-sleeved black shirts with the word “POLICE” printed on the back and black pants. Both were armed with guns, authorities said.
The two men ordered him to the ground and handcuffed him. His apartment keys and cellphone were removed and tossed near the vehicle, according to the affidavit. A third man picked up the cellphone and threw it across the parking lot before retrieving the keys and signaling for Johnson and another man to exit the Camry.
Johnson and two other men then entered the apartment building and used the Bethune’s keys to access his apartment, authorities said.
Inside, surveillance video showed two of the men entering the bedroom area, while another pointed a gun at a sofa in the living room, where a second victim was sitting, according to the affidavit. The man on the sofa stood up and armed himself with an AK-47-style rifle, deputies say.

Johnson and the unidentified man raised their guns at each other. The second victim shot Johnson multiple times as Johnson also fired at him, according to the affidavit. Johnson and the two other men continued shooting at the second victim.
With no apparent escape route, Johnson and the two men jumped from a third-story bedroom window in an attempt to flee, authorities said. Investigators noted that blood and broken glass were found on the apartment’s floors, walls, curtains and blinds.
While a shootout was happening inside the apartment, the driver and passenger of the Toyota Camry were forcing Bethune into the car as he tried to escape. Surveillance video showed Johnson and the two others running back to the car. Johnson was dropped off at Jackson North Medical Center.
The others in the Camry drove Bethune to the area of Southwest 216th Street and 189th Avenue, where he was shot multiple times and killed. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled his death a homicide.
After the killing, the men allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by setting the Camry on fire near Southwest 248th Street and 157th Avenue.
Johnson was discharged from HCA Aventura Hospital on Thursday and taken to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau for questioning. He invoked his right to have an attorney present during questioning.
Johnson was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping, attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping with a weapon or firearm, shooting a deadly missile, armed robbery with a firearm, falsely impersonating an officer resulting in death, and armed burglary with assault or battery,
He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remains as of Thursday with a bond status of “to be set.”
