Cowboys’ Hire of Mike Pettine Sounds a Loud Alarm About the Defense
The Dallas Cowboys hired Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant Monday, inserting an experienced former NFL head coach and defensive coordinator into Christian Parker’s staff before Sunday night’s Week 6 game against the Green Bay Packers. The move gives Parker a veteran resource as Dallas tries to stabilize a defense that has struggled through five games.

Pettine previously worked with Parker in Green Bay and knows several Cowboys players, including defensive tackle Kenny Clark and edge rusher Rashan Gary. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Pettine will support the defense under Parker’s leadership, framing the addition as an experienced sounding board rather than a shakeup.
Locked On Cowboys host Marcus Mosher viewed the timing as the telling part of the transaction. Pettine’s background makes him a logical addition to a young staff, Mosher said, but bringing him in during the regular season signals that the Cowboys believed they needed help immediately.
Locked On Cowboys co-host Landon McCool said Pettine’s value should show up most during the week, particularly in game-planning and organizing how the front and coverage work together. McCool pointed to run-pass conflicts that have left defenders responsible for competing demands, an issue Pettine could help Parker simplify before calls reach game day.
That work fits Pettine’s résumé. He has been a defense coordinator for the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers, and he most recently worked with the Minnesota Vikings. Parker also worked under Pettine as a Packers defensive quality control coach, giving the new assistant familiarity with both the coordinator and the 3-4 principles Dallas uses.
The hire gives Parker another set of eyes as the defense weighs changes before facing Green Bay. Mosher and McCool argued that the Cowboys need cleaner tackling, more coherent pressure plans and fewer coverage breakdowns if Pettine’s arrival is going to produce a quick on-field benefit.

Pettine is expected to join the Cowboys immediately, leaving the Packers game as the first test of whether Dallas can translate added experience in the meeting room into a more functional defensive plan.
Cowboys News and Notes
– Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring) said he is hopeful he can return against Green Bay after missing the previous four games. His availability could give Dallas another option besides rookie Jaishawn Barham as it searches for steadier linebacker play.
– Mosher argued the Cowboys should consider reducing cornerback DaRon Bland’s role until his coverage and tackling improve. He also suggested Dallas needs a more dependable option opposite cornerback Joey Porter Jr. if Bland’s struggles continue.
– Mosher and McCool want more snaps for Cowboys edge rusher Malachi Lawrence, whose speed they believe offers more upside than a passive pass-rush rotation. They specifically preferred a larger role for Lawrence over veteran edge rusher Von Miller.
