Michael Porter Jr. Has Three Words for Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham
Sophie Cunningham averaged 7.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 43 games played for the Indiana Fever in the 2026 season. She also shot 41.9% from deep, which ranked as the second-best mark on the team among players who attempted more than 10 triples.

The 30-year-old guard was the Fever’s fourth-best scorer behind the Big 3 of Kelsey Mitchell, Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston. She also established herself as a key reserve for Indiana, with the team even promoting her for the Sixth Player of the Year award.
However, Cunningham also sparked controversy during the season, with her views on transgender athletes in women’s sports dividing the WNBA fan base.
Due to the unnecessary distraction that Cunningham created for the Fever during the season, The Athletic’s Candace Buckner expressed her belief that Indiana should part ways with the WNBA veteran in free agency. Cunningham is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
“Cunningham is too combustible, her takes too turbulent to be paired with Caitlin Clark. On the same team, it’s just too much,” Buckner wrote in her opinion piece.
The Fever star, however, couldn’t care less about Buckner’s take. In a recent episode of her podcast, Cunningham sent a defiant message and emphasized that she’s not going to change.
“That’s why I literally don’t even care what anyone says about me anymore. I’ve said this so many times: If you’re going to live by the praise, you’re going to die by the hate,” Cunningham stated.

Both Cunningham and Porter played college basketball for Missouri, with the former suiting up for the Tigers women’s basketball team from 2015 to 2019. Porter, meanwhile, was with the men’s basketball team during the 2017-18 season.
It remains to be seen whether Cunningham will return to Indiana next season. Regardless, it’s clear that she still has plenty of supporters, including her fellow Missouri alum.
