The plan would place a federally designated facility next to a private business owned by the president’s family. Palm Beach County commissioners must approve the plan.

Here are key takeaways:

• Trump’s plan would not be the first time the area has accommodated presidents looking for a retreat. Harry S. Truman visited Key West often, followed by Dwight Eisenhower. John F. Kennedy had a family compound in Palm Beach and Richard Nixon’s had an enclave in Key Biscayne.
• An attorney for Trump International Golf Club brought the proposal to the Palm Beach County Commission in September, asking leaders to consider providing county-owned land to the federal government. Palm Beach County officials are consulting with the General Services Administration.

• Trump told reporters the Secret Service has approved the idea and added the site is “about as safe as they could possibly get” and roughly two minutes from the airport. He said the retreat would not be for him but for future presidents.
• Under the proposal, Trump International would pay for construction of a presidential residence and related facilities. The existing 27-hole Trump International Golf Club would remain privately operated, with Trump’s company continuing to make lease payments to the county.
