Inside rocker MGK’s new cafe in Wynwood: ‘Unapologetically authentic’

Wynwood just got a little edgier, if possible. A bonafide rock star just opened a cafe in Miami’s ever-changing, artsiest neighborhood.

So now when you’re walking the streets perusing the galleries or scoping out the new Carnegie Mellon campus, you can tuck into a spot owned by Machine Gun Kelly, called MGK’s 27 Club Coffee.

The “Bad Things” singer first opened the flagship in 2020 in Cleveland, where the Texan spent the latter part of his childhood. The South Florida outpost marks the second location for the coffeehouse, which is described as “unapologetically authentic” on its website.

“27 Club is a destination for lovers of coffee, music and art. Blending our love of good coffee and food with nightlife, Miami was the natural next location,” MGK’s team said in a statement. “The culture of the Wynwood Arts District stuck out to us as a perfect fit for our DNA.”

This place isn’t anything like your local Starbucks. The name comes from the macabre pop-culture reference, the 27 Club, whose members include a group of musicians who died prematurely at that age. Think Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. MGK, the initials the artist born Colson Baker is referred to these days, is 36.

Because the music star is running the show, you can expect more than just morning joe and grub-like breakfast sandwiches, bowls and quesadillas. The punky, pink-accented space also houses an indoor stage where late-night acts will perform. Merch, such as T-shirts, hats and tumblers, will also be for sale online and on site.

Note: It’s unclear if MGK fans head over there that they’ll be able to get an in-the-flesh selfie with the Grammy nominee, who took his moniker from the Prohibition-era gangster. We reached out to his rep to see when or if he’d be brewing behind the counter (a la Jimmy Butler at Bigface nearby) and didn’t hear back.

We get it, MGK is a busy man. The father of two, who co-parents a baby girl with famous ex Megan Fox, just wrapped a world tour. He is also reportedly “spending time” with actress Dakota Johnson after meeting at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s NYC wedding.

Here’s to hoping MGK will be in our midst to christen his newest baby when Wynwood starts heating up (and by that, we mean cooling down) during Art Basel in December.
