Uniqlo, the minimalist casual wear retailer known to excite Gen Z influencers, says it’s Miami’s turn as the company makes its first moves into a couple of local hotspots.

The company’s CEO says they’re tapping into what makes Miami Miami.

Uniqlo announced Thursday morning that its Aventura Mall store will open on Thursday, Nov. 5. A week later on Nov. 12, a Uniqlo opens on the revamping Lincoln Road in Miami Beach.

The reveal comes after Uniqlo released plans in February to open the new stores in the fall.

“We’ve wanted to come to South Florida for some time and were waiting for the right locations — stores where we could establish a meaningful presence, fully represent the Uniqlo brand, and showcase our complete product assortment and services,” said Fuminori Adachi, CEO of Uniqlo USA, in an email interview with the Miami Herald.

“Miami offers a unique opportunity to connect with one of the country’s most diverse and internationally connected customer bases, and we’ve already seen strong demand for Uniqlo through our online business,” Adachi said.

The celebrations in New York featured Japanese Taiko drummers pounding traditional rhythms and a sake barrel opening ceremony called Kagami Biraki, which translates to “opening the mirror” and symbolizes harmony and a new beginning.

Uniqlo didn’t reveal if its South Florida opening festivities would replicate the Big Apple’s driving and harmonious vibes, but there’s certainly room. Lincoln Road has the street space to entertain snaking lines of excited locals and visitors. Aventura is the biggest mall in Florida and fifth largest in the country, and can accommodate a two-level newcomer.

“Uniqlo choosing Lincoln Road for one of its first two South Florida stores is a meaningful vote of confidence in the district and the momentum we’re seeing today,” said Lyle Stern, the president of the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District. “This is an internationally renowned brand with a truly global customer base, and its decision to establish a presence here speaks to Lincoln Road’s continued strength as a retail destination and the opportunity brands see in Miami Beach.”

Uniqlo is known for its in-house-designed, cost-conscious “LifeWear” basics. The men’s and women’s T-shirts, jackets, jeans, sweaters, cardigans, underwear, slacks and parkas aim for functional rather than trendy. That formula has helped make the product trendsetting.

Uniqlo USA’s Instagram is followed by nearly 800,000 people, and its TikTok has about 218,000. There are separate accounts for the various territories around the world the company serves. The global Uniqlo Instagram account has 2.8 million followers.

Uniqlo has 88 stores in the United States, according to Adachi. In Florida, there are two stores in Orlando, with a third Florida location opening on Oct. 23 in East Orlando’s Waterford Lakes community three miles south of the University of Central Florida campus.

The Aventura Mall and Lincoln Road stores are Uniqlo’s first stores in the Miami market and will bring the Florida total to five locations once both stores are open in November.

International and local celebs

Celebrities including music producer Pharrell Williams and tennis pros Emma Raducanu, Kei Nishikori and Novak Djokovic have been brand ambassadors for Uniqlo, and collectively have promoted the stores with appearances in New York, Tokyo and Paris.

Designer Alexander Wang collaborated with Uniqlo on a collection and attended earlier launch events in New York City.

Actress Emma Watson was spotted in Tokyo sporting Uniqlo threads, and Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett is a brand ambassador.

Uniqlo’s “Made for All. Made for Miami” campaign spotlights local residents in visual ads across outdoor media, in-store displays, and digital channels.

“The campaign will explore Miami through its sounds, flavors, architecture, movement, and multicultural point of view — showing how LifeWear supports different lifestyles across a city always in motion,” Uniqlo touts.

Miami area participants include Art Deco-inspired Euphoria Collective interior decorator Dani Klaric; model and co-founder of La Vie modeling agency Josie Lentner; Cuban-American multimedia artist Lazaro Rodriguez; Michelin-star chef and Grassfed Culture Hospitality co-founder Sebastian Vargas.

Artist collaborations

Uniqlo’s Aventura and Lincoln Road stores will offer collaborative UTme! T-shirts featuring conceptions by local artists and organizations that include Art Deco-themed looks by Dani Klaric; Joe’s Stone Crab designs; Bobbie Goods’ Miami-inspired designs from the lifestyle and stationery brand; and images evoking Mexican beverage brand Jarritos.

At Aventura Mall’s store customers will find an UTme! customization station so they can create original designs on T-shirts and tote bags.

These local touches and collaborations with Miami businesses and artists, “will give both stores a strong sense of place,” Adachi said.

What to expect inside

“Each store has been shaped by its setting and plays a complementary role in Miami,” Adachi said.

The Aventura store at 19501 Biscayne Blvd. will take over two floors of the sprawling mall, some 17,269 square feet of selling space. The two-level size will allow Uniqlo to showcase its full LifeWear assortment, the chief executive officer said.

The South Beach location opens its 8,557-square-foot store at 530 Lincoln Rd. in a historic building originally constructed in 1929 by John Collins, who created the master plan for Miami Beach. Eons ago, the storefront housed the Miami Beach Tribune, a 1930s newspaper. More recently, it served as a space for Showfields, a New York-based retailer that hosted artist installations, restaurants and bars in 2020.

“Its facade captures the classic South Florida aesthetic,” Adachi said.

Both stores will offer a full assortment of LifeWear for women, men, and kids, along with collaboration UTme! T-shirts featuring local artists and organizations.

Uniqlo is also partnering with the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library to run a yearlong “My First Library Card Program,” which includes a month-long design contest launching Oct. 1. The community can submit original artwork celebrating a child’s first library card. Designs will be unveiled at events at the Aventura and Miami Beach branch libraries.
