Breanna Stewart Had Words for Angel Reese After WNBA Incident

Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty lost to Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream on Monday night, 95-84. Despite Stewie dropping game highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds, her efforts were not enough to overcome a balanced Dream squad.

Five players scored in double figures for Atlanta, with Jordin Canada leading the way with 19 points, nine assists and three steals. Reese added a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The biggest difference-maker for Atlanta was DeWanna Bonner, who recorded 17 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal off the bench. Her performance allowed the Dream’s second unit to outscore the Liberty’s bench, 20-8.

Making the loss even more frustrating for Stewart, however, was the fact that she was called for a technical foul during the game.

With 1:58 remaining in the fourth quarter, Reese blocked Stewart’s jump shot and stole the ball. However, the Liberty forward was not happy with the no-call since she thought that the Dream star slapped her left hand.

After Stewart fouled Reese to stop play, she proceeded to complain to the referee, prompting the tech. It was her first technical foul since 2017.

Following the Liberty’s loss, Stewart talked about the tech and didn’t hold back when sharing her thoughts.

“That absolutely was [because of] the no-call,” Stewart said when explaining why she argued with the referee, per Madeline Kenney of the New York Post. “She slapped the [expletive] out of my hand. So yeah, you gotta see that. Baseline ref, you gotta see that.”

Moreover, according to Liberty reporter Myles Ehrlich, Stewart shouted, “Angel should pay my fine,” as she was walking out of the press conference. When another reporter inquired whether she said that to Reese, the Liberty star said yes.

It’s worth noting that under the increased WNBA penalties this season, the first three technical fouls of a player each carry a $500 fine.

Reese has yet to address Stewart’s message to her following the incident. However, it should be remembered that the two recently played together for Team USA in the FIBA World Cup.
